Biography

Dr. Jiale Man is an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling at 91̽»¨. Dr. Man earned his PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to that, Dr. Man completed his master’s education in counseling (clinical mental health and school counseling) at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Man’s teaching philosophy is rooted in rational, didactic, and experiential methods, aiming to help counseling students develop critical thinking and counseling skills for their practice. His goal for counselor education extends beyond preparing students for career success to guide them in cultivating a self-managed life through self-reflection and critical reflexivity. Dr. Man has taught a variety of counseling courses at the master’s level and supervised students in clinical, school, and higher education settings.

Dr. Man’s research is grounded in (1) direct engagement and services with LGBTGEQIAP+ adults and (2) resilience-based exploration of experiences of minoritized sexual/affectional and relationship orientations through an intersectional lens, as well as how such experiences influence individuals’ navigation of social systems. His research interests include LGBTGEQIAP+ relationship health, stress, and resilience, diversity and inclusion within the queer community, as well as queer affirming counseling.

Dr. Man has counseling experience with clients from different backgrounds in both school and clinical settings in the U.S. and China. He takes an integrative approach grounded in existential psychotherapy, cultural-relational therapy, and multicultural counseling, in which authenticity, connection, and empowerment are valued to challenge the power, privilege, and oppression that shape our existential concerns. His areas of clinical expertise include relationship stress and health, sexuality, trauma, depression, anxiety, acculturation, and identity development.
